Thank you Larissa, for keeping us posted. I do appreciate it. I'm aware it must be difficult to juggle what you do here and your life in general there. Trust me, that's not lost on me. I'm curious to know more about the developments with the Lend/Lease agreement between the states and Ukraine. I remember those negotiations in the earlier days of the war and strove to understand the intricacies then. I hope you stay safe and wish the best for your fellow countrymen in your native homeland. Keep alert, stay safe, stay strong. Thanks again.
"Lend-lease" is a topic on which I devour as much information as I can. Personally, I think we've had our toe in the water for too long and now it's time to get into the pool. Ukraine has proven they can do a lot of damage with old and inferior equipment so let's send them the really good stuff!
The weapons and equipment are coming. I'm sensing a sort of competition brewing as far as who sends what and how can one country better another's contributions to the defenders. There's finger pointing and donation shaming among Western nations which hopefully leads to an enviable armory for Ukraine. I'm fairly confident that we're seeing this ghastly war for what it truly is and that the necessity to arm Ukraine for victory is becoming more than just a withering sentiment. I can picture Biden saying, "Geez, I guess these folks really want to win this thing."
Justin, do please keep this conversation going with your fellow countryfolk who don't have as clear of an idea why defending--and arming--Ukraine matters.
I most certainly will. If we don't assist Ukraine today, we might be asking for the same kind of help tomorrow. Russia must be stopped dead. The Defenders are relentless but they deserve hardware to match their patriotism. Slava Ukrayini!
Congratulations. On your great work teaching, writing and all that your work involves. Congratulations that this work has been recognized by Substack. Yours is one of my favorites. In fact, I have been planning to write a post quoting and linking to my favorite substacks, including yours. I hope you're savoring your rest and soaking up your magic right now. And I hope you know how much light ad depth your work brings. Cheers!
I have just started a Substack on antiracism, inclusion and equality and I will be following your every word with eager anticipation. Of what I've read so far, your writing is full of bravery, honesty and eloquence. The pen certainly seems at least as mighty as the sword. Good luck with 2023 and thank you for sharing.
I appreciate your reports and your unique perspective. My paternal family fled Ukraine in the late 1800's, so I am just one generation away from their refugee experience.
I would appreciate your recommendation of the groups that are most effective in supporting displaced persons in Ukraine. I want to avoid the big NGOs where only a fraction of my donation might make it to those who most need assistance.
Thank you, Carl for your support! I know several small and sprightly organizations that aid displaced persons among other things. Ukrainian Patriot (https://ukrainianpatriot.org/patron/) delivers basic supplies to people in the east and south; Community Self-Help (https://communityselfhelp.org/) provides supplies and psychosocial support to IDPs in Lviv; and Heroes for Ukraine (https://heroesukraine.org/en/) helps people in the Mykolaiv region (both those who have stayed and those who have fled Kherson) -- https://www.facebook.com/heroesukraine.org. I have worked with each of these organizations in some capacity over the past year and can speak to the dedication of their volunteers and to the fact that donations go toward the purchase and delivery of necessary supplies above all else.

Thanks, Matt! Discourse matters no less than what happens on the battlefield. Good luck with your new writing endeavor!
I think you should tell your friends to be grateful for our support. Without it, they are doomed
Without it, we are ALL doomed
